Aquarium dates from 1996, was published by the Japanese company Excellent System, and is catalogued among arcade titles preserved through MAME emulation. The record notes a top-down view and support for more than one player.

Excellent System belonged to the second tier of Japanese arcade board manufacturers. Companies like it operated outside the spotlight, and their output survives largely because of emulation — without MAME most of these games would be unknown today, since they never appeared on home consoles and surviving boards are scarce.

1996 was a turning point in arcades. Large venues were converting to 3D graphics and fighting games, while smaller manufacturers kept supplying two-dimensional cabinets to bars, small arcades and shops where the price of the machine mattered more than technical leadership. Puzzle games and titles with simple rules fitted that market best, because a passer-by could understand them without instruction.

The overhead view and two-player support are typical of that segment. A cabinet earns through short rounds and through the possibility that a second player drops in a coin and joins mid-game, so the whole design is bent toward being readable at a glance and playable within seconds of starting.

Emulation has no substitute for this part of the medium's history. Arcade boards were produced in small runs, scrapped once a cabinet was retired and often documented nowhere. That anything can be played today is the result of people reading out ROM contents before the last surviving units failed.
