André reaches into the fridge for a cold one, but instead of a night out, he finds himself trapped in a side-scrolling nightmare on the Spectrum. Matthew Smith, the mind behind this 1984 oddity, clearly had a twisted sense of what constitutes a evening off.

The setup is deliberately absurd: you control André through a series of single-screen platforming segments, collecting objects while dodging enemies that seem to have wandered in from someone else's game. There's no grand narrative, no world-threatening catastrophe—just a bloke trying to survive what should have been a simple trip to the pub. The Spectrum's colour palette works against the game more than for it; the whole thing has that washed-out look where enemies blend into backgrounds and you're never quite sure what you're supposed to avoid until you've already collided with it.

Mechanically, it's bare-bones. You jump, you move left and right, you pick up items. The controls respond, more or less, though the jump physics feel floaty in that particular Spectrum way—committed once you've pressed the button, no mid-air correction. Enemies patrol predictable paths, but the cramped screen space means there's often nowhere to go. It's the kind of game where progress feels more like luck than skill, where you memorise enemy positions and execute runs rather than adapt on the fly. The collision detection is generous enough to be forgiving, then suddenly punishing without warning.

What makes André's Night Off worth remembering isn't brilliance—it's the oddness. Here's a platformer from an era when platformers were everywhere, yet it commits fully to its ridiculous premise and refuses to justify itself. No exposition, no cutscenes, just André and his inexplicable predicament. By 1984 standards, it's competent enough to not feel broken, but it's never compelling enough to feel essential either.

Today it's a curiosity, the kind of thing you boot up in an emulator out of morbid interest rather than genuine anticipation. The Spectrum's technical limitations show their age—attribute clash makes sprites bleed into one another, and the overall presentation feels cramped even by period standards. But if you're mining the early '80s library for oddities, this scratches that itch for something genuinely peculiar, something a developer made and then moved on from without much ceremony.
