Victory Run was among the first games released for the PC Engine, the console Hudson Soft and NEC brought to market in 1987 and which competed with Nintendo and Sega hardware in Japan for years. As a launch title its job was to show what the machine could do, and it chose a format popular at the time: an endurance rally race across desert terrain.

Racing here is not purely about speed. The game models damage and component wear, so tyres, engine, gearbox and other parts degrade over a stage and are replaced between stages from a limited stock of spares. You therefore have to decide what to carry and what to swap, which is a surprisingly strategic layer for an arcade racer. Careless driving shows up a stage later.

The PC Engine had an advantage for this kind of game in a video chip that handled more colours and more sprites than competing 8-bit consoles. The road scrolled smoothly and the horizon carried more detail than players were used to, which was a persuasive argument in 1987.
