ThunderCats, published by Elite Systems in 1987 for the Commodore 64 and other 8-bit machines, is a licensed action game based on the hugely popular animated series of the same name. You take control of Lion-O, leader of the ThunderCats and wielder of the Sword of Omens, in a side-scrolling arcade adventure inspired by the show's heroic-fantasy setting on Third Earth.

Like many cartoon tie-ins of the period, it leaned on the recognisability of its source material and delivered fast, reflex-driven action rather than deep mechanics. Elite was a prolific producer of licensed 8-bit games in this era, and ThunderCats fits the pattern of colourful, challenging platform-action titles built to capitalise on a TV property. It's very much a product of its time: appealing to fans of the series, tough in the way 8-bit games often were, and best appreciated today as a nostalgic snapshot of the licensed-game wave that swept home computers in the mid-1980s.
