Reactor

Reactor came out in 1982 from Gottlieb, a company that until then had built its reputation on pinball machines. It shows. The entire design rests on momentum and rebounds, the physics Gottlieb understood better than anyone. You control an object inside a nuclear reactor, and your job is not to shoot but to ram particles hard enough to push them into the outer walls and destroy them.

There is no direct brake. The ship behaves like a body in frictionless space — you accelerate, then spend the rest of your time correcting the drift, which becomes a serious problem as more objects fill the screen. Meanwhile the reactor core keeps heating up and the containment walls close in, so the space you have to manoeuvre in shrinks exactly when you need it most. That squeeze is where all the tension comes from.

The Atari 2600 conversion makes the expected compromises: fewer details, coarser resolution and a thinner soundscape than the arcade board. The console had severely limited graphics capability and the playfield had to be assembled from what little it could draw. The concept survives anyway, because it depends on movement physics rather than visual fidelity.

Today Reactor is interesting mainly as evidence that 1982 arcades were still experimenting with mechanics that fit no established category. It is neither a shooter nor a maze game.
