NBA Action '94

Sega put NBA Action '94 out on the Mega Drive and Genesis in 1994 with the 1993-94 rosters, all twenty-seven franchises of the day and real player names. Malibu Interactive handled development. The context matters: EA's NBA Live owned the market, and this was Sega trying to build a basketball brand of its own on the same hardware.

Structurally it is a full package for the era. Five-on-five play, exhibition games, a season of twenty, forty or the whole eighty-two games, and playoffs at the end of it. The control set covers shooting, passing, pump fakes and a speed burst on offence, plus jumping, stealing and player switching on defence. Underneath sit fatigue, adjustable defensive aggression and per-player hot and cold spots on the floor. There is a coaching layer as well, though three offensive plays make it thin. Multitap support pushes the game to five simultaneous humans, which was generous for 1994.

Then there is the camera, which is what anyone who played it remembers. The court is drawn at an angle, and the instant the ball crosses half court the entire view swings forty-five degrees to face the other basket. The intent is obvious enough. The effect is that every change of possession disorients you for a beat, and running a fast break turns into a guessing exercise. Contemporary reviewers called it nauseating and they were not overstating it.

Marv Albert's commentary is the highlight and still sounds surprisingly clean coming off a cartridge. The visuals are the weak link: tiny sprites, flat courts, and fouls that are almost impossible to anticipate because the animation barely telegraphs contact. It runs straight in the browser, so sampling it costs nothing, but go in knowing that the rotating floor is the first opponent you have to beat. As a Mega Drive basketball game to actually keep playing, it is a curiosity rather than a default recommendation.
