When I sat at a monitor in the nineties, I expected a game, not a digital postcard. Cyber BBS Intro is exactly that — an intro, not a full game, more like a demo scene or an integral part of some bigger package nobody remembers. It's a piece of early internet frozen in time.

It's a floppy that boots in the computer and plays something between an animation and an interactive exhibition. Cyberpunk aesthetics with ANSI art, ASCII animations, and clickable buttons — that was normal for the mid-nineties underground computer bulletin board systems. A typical thing you downloaded from a BBS on a 14k4 modem, taking ten minutes, and then you ran it, watched five minutes of graphics and went to play Doom.

There are no mechanics here — there's navigation and viewing. You can go through individual screens, maybe click something if intuition allows. Keyboard, maybe arrows. The goal isn't to play, but to watch. Sound, if you manage to squeeze it out of some older sound card, should be part of the atmosphere — that typical high-frequency beep that demo makers adorned themselves with and your head buzzed after a while.

Cyber BBS Intro is primarily an artifact. A memory of a time when the internet wasn't yet the web and people gave time to things that weren't games. In the demo scene such intros had eternal value — they were so-called calling cards, a way groups said they existed. Today it looks like antiquity with pixelation that wasn't enough even back then, but had flair and conviction.

Who should play it? Someone who wants to grasp the feeling from the beginning of the nineties. Not for entertainment — those are real games here. But for knowledge, to see what the cult around BBS and the demo scene looked like. You'll find an emulator in your browser that takes you back to a time when a computer in the room squeaked on startup and every file had weight.
