My first encounter with a computer in 1988 involved trying everything I could find on floppy disks. Motorbike Madness was one of those programs that looked promising and ended in disappointment.

It's a motorcycle racing simulator for MS-DOS. You sit on a bike, choose a track, and desperately try to reach the finish line without crashing. The game posed as something between Pole Position and real riding, but reality was far more underwhelming.

The controls were primitive — sometimes you can't even tell if the motorcycle responds to your commands or just does whatever it feels like. The bike behaved like a drunk guy fresh out of a bar — unpredictable and ungrateful. The graphics consisted of a few pixels that crawled across the screen like a photo taken from a boat on a river. The sounds, when there were any, sounded like surgery being performed in a cultural center.

The point of this piece of code escapes me. It's neither fun, nor challenging, nor educational. If you're knowledgeable about this era, you know that in the eighties, you could accomplish more even with worse technology. But it didn't always work out.

Today it's primarily an artifact — proof that not everything someone programmed made sense to release. If you want to experience racing on an old PC, there are better options. If you want to see how it sometimes just didn't work, here's your example.
