Arena Football

Arena Football for the Commodore 64, dated 1988, is based on the indoor variant of American football — a shorter field walled in by boards, smaller squads, and much higher scoring. For a computer game of the period that is actually an advantage: a compact field fits the screen better, and the faster tempo translates to eight-bit graphics more readily than the slow positional play of the outdoor game.

It uses a side view and belongs to the era's category of sports titles where the player controls one figure at a time, switches roles as play develops, and works with a single-button joystick. By 1988 the C64 had a well-established sports scene, complete with statistics, play selection and simple tactical menus — one of the few things a machine with 64 kB of memory handled without compromise, since text and numbers cost almost nothing.

Technically, expect what the C64 did: sprites on a restricted palette, a field that scrolls sideways, and sound from the SID chip, which even in sports games managed a convincing crowd atmosphere.

Most people opening it today are not after tactical depth; they want to see how American football was modelled on a home computer in the eighties.
