Alone in the Dark 2, released by Infogrames in 1993, is the sequel to the game widely credited with inventing the survival-horror template. Detective Edward Carnby returns, this time swapping the first game's Lovecraftian haunted mansion for a gangster-and-voodoo tale: he ventures into Hell's Kitchen, a mansion run by a crew of undead prohibition-era gangsters and a sinister pirate sorcery, to rescue a kidnapped girl.

Like the original, it renders polygonal 3D characters over hand-painted fixed-camera backdrops, a striking technique that gives the game its distinctive cinematic look and lets the designers frame each room for maximum unease. This entry, however, leans much more heavily toward action than horror, handing Carnby plenty of guns and pitting him against squads of armed thugs, so the mood is closer to a pulpy shoot-out than the slow dread of the first game.

That shift is the sequel's most divisive quality. The combat, hampered by the notoriously stiff tank controls, can be frustrating, and the game is genuinely hard, with several fiddly set-pieces that demand patience. Yet its ambition, atmosphere and clever puzzle-and-stealth sections still shine through, and its technical presentation was remarkable for 1993. It is a flawed but fascinating chapter in the birth of the genre.
