Turbo is an arcade classic from Sega, from the very start of the eighties, and one of the first racing games to put the camera behind the car — its view of a winding road stretching out past the bonnet arrived before the more famous Pole Position. Home versions were handled by Coleco, which held the rights to the arcade machine, and the DOS release from 1987 that you will find here is filed under its name as well.

The game itself is arcade purity: drive forward, overtake, survive. Each stage asks you to pass a set number of cars before the timer runs out, otherwise the run is over, and every crash costs you precious seconds. No laps, no tactics — just the road, the traffic and the accelerator pressed to the floor.

What stunned arcade-goers at the time was the scenery. The road keeps transforming as you drive: a city, night-time darkness, tunnels, bridges, open countryside, all rushing past at a pace no other racer matched back then. That feeling of going somewhere, through a world changing before your eyes, was what made Turbo an attraction.

Seen with today's eyes, honesty is required: the handling is rough, rival cars appear on the road in ways that feel random and often unfair, and collisions can be properly frustrating. Anyone raised on later racing games will need to recalibrate to this very early form of the genre. But that is exactly why Turbo is worth a look — it captures the moment when racing games were still working out what the world behind the wheel should look like.
