The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II: The Rise of the Witch King is a 2006 expansion for the second Middle-earth strategy game, developed by BreakAway Games. Being an expansion, it requires the original release and will not run on its own, which was standard practice for add-on packs of that period.

Its main contribution is a new playable side. The pack adds the northern realm of the dark sorcerer as a faction — a force that appeared in the base game only as an opponent — together with its own units, heroes and buildings. The campaign follows that army's march, so you play the side you previously spent your time defeating.

Mechanically it is a real-time strategy game with base construction on predetermined plots, heroes who gain levels, and large battles where units fight in formations. 2006 was still a good year for the genre on PC: hardware could carry hundreds of figures on screen and swoop a cinematic camera down into the fighting.

The expansion also demonstrates how licences were handled in the mid-2000s. The publisher held rights to the film version of the world and filled campaigns with events the films never showed, stretching the licence across more releases.
