Oo-Topos

Oo-Topos is a science-fiction adventure from Sentient Software. It first appeared at the very start of the eighties as a pure text game; the DOS version from 1987 added static illustrations to the written descriptions, but the heart of the game is still text and a keyboard. The premise is space pulp in the best sense of the word: pirates have ambushed your ship, looted your valuable cargo, and you wake up in a cell in a prison complex on an alien planet.

The opening is a proper adventure-game ritual — getting out of your own cell. Then a sprawling base opens up: corridors, laboratories, storerooms, hangars. Your goal is clear from the first minute: recover the scattered pieces of your cargo and equipment, get your ship working, and leave the planet behind. You play by typing commands — LOOK, TAKE, OPEN and dozens of other verbs — so this is a game about reading carefully and experimenting.

Above all, it is a mapping game. There are dozens of rooms, the paths branch, and without pencil and paper you will get lost. The alien technology is deliberately described as alien — the machines carry no labels, and working out what each one does is half the fun. The other half is classic object puzzling: what to pick up, where to carry it, and in what order the chain of steps has to click together.

To be fair, this is old school through and through. You can easily miss an important item and only find out an hour later, some verbs simply have to be guessed, and the game makes nothing easier for you. If you enjoy that kind of archaeology, you get an atmospheric and surprisingly large piece of science fiction that holds together; if parsers make you lose patience, steer well clear.
