Pimania

Pimania is a 1982 release from the British label Automata UK and one of the strangest things ever published for the ZX Spectrum. The record files it as a text-based game for one player, but its reputation has little to do with genre - the game was tied to a competition for a real prize, awarded to whoever solved its puzzle.

That idea connected the game to the world outside the screen. The solution did not merely end the program; it pointed to an actual place and time, so players worked at it for years and the arguments spilled into the magazines of the day. Seen from now, it is a very early ancestor of games that extend play beyond the computer.

1982 means the very beginning of the Spectrum. Memory was minimal, output largely textual with simple graphics attached, and authors could afford experiments because no settled idea of what a game should look like yet existed.

Automata UK made eccentricity part of its identity. Its releases came with unusual packaging, music and a distinct sense of humour, which is why they are collected today as artefacts of a moment rather than as straightforward entertainment.

Played now, the competition is history and what remains is the program itself: a puzzle written for people who had time, a keyboard and a magazine letters page for arguing. That is a different experience from the original one, but it does show how much of the appeal was carried by the writing and the deliberately odd tone rather than by mechanics.
