Galactic Gunners

Galactic Gunners is a 1987 ZX Spectrum release, and the catalogue attaches to it the name Miroslav Fídler and the label Cybexlab Software — the Czech scene, at a time when no official games market existed in the country at all.

That context is the important part. Domestic production in the late eighties operated under conditions that bear no comparison with Britain or Spain: computers were hard to obtain, documentation was scarce, and distribution ran through cassettes circulating between acquaintances and computer clubs. Even so, a number of technically respectable games came out of it, and Cybexlab was among the better-known names to emerge from that environment.

The ZX Spectrum was the logical host. It was the most widespread machine available, and its limitations — above all the notorious colour attribute clash — could be worked around through stylisation. Authors learned to build largely monochrome graphics with colour accents and to tune them so the screen stayed readable during fast movement.

You can run the game directly in your browser, which is by far the easiest route into eight-bit Czech software today; original cassettes are archive material and nobody keeps a tape deck any more.

The catalogue holds nothing further about the content, so describing it would be invention. What remains is historical value: evidence of what a small Czech scene could produce in 1987, and a chance to compare it directly against foreign output of the same year without anyone else's commentary in between.
