Federation

Federation was released in 1988 under the CRL Group label, one of the more visible publishers on the British Spectrum scene, credited to Mike White and Nigel Brooks. Neither genre nor perspective is recorded here, so there is no point pretending to know how the game plays; what is worth doing instead is placing it in its moment.

By 1988 the ZX Spectrum was in the late phase of its life. Eight-bit machines were competing with the Amiga and Atari ST, but the British market remained enormous and cassette games sold at low prices. Developers had learned to extract a great deal from the hardware: more content fitted into 48 KB than a few years earlier, compression and scrolling techniques had improved, and the visuals pushed close to what the machine could physically manage.

CRL had a reputation for carrying bolder and more unusual titles alongside safe arcade fare. That says nothing specific about this game, but it does sketch the context it appeared in.

The usual constraints apply: colour stored in character blocks, single-channel beeper sound on a base machine, cassette loading. Later releases quite often supported the AY sound chip in the 128 KB model, a difference that is audible within seconds.

With later Spectrum titles it is worth trying a 128 KB machine where the emulation allows it; the difference in sound is often immediate.
