Cosmo Gang the Video is a 1992 Namco shooter for the Super Nintendo. It arrived as the home version of an arcade game and reuses characters Namco had originally created for prize machines, recasting them as the familiar enemies descending from the top of the screen.

The record lists a side-on view and support for one or more players. Returning to a fixed-screen design, with enemies arriving in formations while the player slides along the bottom edge, was a deliberate nod in 1992 to the genre's late-seventies origins. Namco had helped invent that format, so this was the company revisiting its own history.

The Super Nintendo let the old format be dressed up considerably. A wide palette, hardware scaling and rotation of background layers, and a sample-based sound chip meant a simple idea could look and sound nothing like its eight-bit ancestors.

Two-player support matters in this kind of game. A second ship on the same screen changes tactics, because the pair split the screen between them and compete for the same targets.

Home versions of arcade games increasingly carried extra content. A cabinet had to be short, whereas a cartridge sold once and had to last, so modes, difficulty settings or bonus stages were added. The Super Nintendo could also keep high scores in battery-backed cartridge memory, so results survived a power-off and family competition acquired a permanent record.
