MegaRace 2 is a 1996 combat-racing game from the French studio Cryo Interactive, and it is remembered above all for its presentation rather than its driving model. Like the original MegaRace, it wraps its races inside a mock television broadcast hosted by the loud, wisecracking Lance Boyle, a live-action host who mugs at the camera between events and gives the whole thing the tongue-in-cheek feel of a trashy future game show.

The racing itself takes place on tracks built from pre-rendered CGI, a technique very much of the mid-90s CD-ROM boom, where studios leaned on lavish rendered visuals rather than real-time 3D. You barrel along fixed courses blasting rival cars with mounted weapons, chasing the spectacle as much as the finish line. The prerendered approach means the sense of freedom is limited, but it let the game look far slicker than its contemporaries could manage in real time.

Today MegaRace 2 holds up best as a time capsule of the FMV era, when full-motion video and rendered movies were treated as the cutting edge. Its personality-driven host and glossy production give it a charm that outlasts the dated mechanics, and it remains an enjoyable curiosity for anyone who loves the excesses of mid-90s multimedia gaming.
