Galaga

Galaga, released by Namco in 1981, is one of the defining fixed-shooter arcade games and the sequel to Galaxian. You control a ship at the bottom of the screen, blasting formations of insect-like alien invaders that swoop down in curving attack patterns. What elevated it above its predecessor and above the swarm of Space Invaders imitators was its ingenious hooks — chiefly the tractor-beam gambit, where an enemy can capture your ship, and if you shoot the captor at the right moment you reclaim your fighter to fly as a twin, doubling your firepower.

That risk-reward mechanic, along with the intermittent Challenging Stages that reward accuracy with bonus points, gave Galaga a depth of play that has kept it in arcades and on compilations for over four decades. The escalating waves, the satisfying dive-bombing enemy choreography, and the crisp scoring made it endlessly replayable.

As a piece of arcade history it is essential, and as a game it remains genuinely fun to pick up today. Few titles from 1981 have aged as gracefully. Whether on original hardware, a home port, or an emulator, Galaga still offers that pure, escalating tension that the best arcade shooters are built on.
