Commander Keen 3: Keen Must Die! closed out the original Invasion of the Vorticons trilogy in 1990, the shareware series that first showed the PC could do smooth, console-quality side-scrolling. Developed by id Software, with John Carmack's clever adaptive tile refresh making the EGA screen scroll as fluidly as an NES, it starred eight-year-old genius Billy Blaze, who dons his brother's football helmet to become Commander Keen. This third episode takes the fight to the Vorticon homeworld itself, where Keen must confront the Grand Intellect behind the alien threat.

The gameplay is classic exploration platforming: you run, jump and use the pogo stick to bounce onto high ledges, collecting points and hunting for the way forward through non-linear levels. Keen's raygun stuns rather than relies on brute force, and much of the challenge comes from reading enemy patterns and timing precise pogo hops. The Vorticon menagerie, from the little Youngsters to the tank-like guardians, gives each level its own hazards, and the finale reveals a twist about who is really pulling the strings.

As the trilogy's capstone it is a touch harder and more combat-focused than its predecessors, and it remains a landmark simply for proving what id could squeeze out of PC hardware, a technical calling card that helped fund the studio's leap to Wolfenstein and Doom. Today it plays as a brisk, charming platformer with real historical weight.
