Bio-Attack

Taito released Bio-Attack in 1983, one of a handful of arcade shooters that swapped outer space for the inside of a human body. You move through an organism, destroying viruses and other invaders while advancing through a sequence of organs. The idea is not merely decorative: the setting allows obstacle shapes and a rhythm unlike a star field, because the passages narrow, pulse and force continuous manoeuvring rather than straight-line strafing.

By 1983 the shooter was a thoroughly established arcade genre and manufacturers were hunting for ways to stand apart from one another. A distinctive visual theme was among the cheapest and most effective tools available. Hardware of the period worked with a restricted palette and no genuine background animation, so the whole impression had to come from the shape and colour of the sprites and from how quickly they moved.

Play follows the conventions of its time: you compete for a score, difficulty rises with every completed stage, and there is no ending in the modern sense. The record notes support for more than one player, which in arcades usually meant alternating turns at a single cabinet rather than simultaneous play.
