Impormasyon ng laro_
Tungkol sa laro

Hindi pa naisasalin ang review na ito — ipinapakita ang orihinal (English).

Scroller is an oddity: a DOS platformer from 2004, written a good decade after the platform itself had died, when the only people still coding for it were hobbyists doing it for love. That is exactly the spirit in which to approach it. The surviving description honestly calls it an early proof-of-concept exercise — the author teaching himself to move a character across a scrolling screen.

You can take in the whole game in about a minute. Arrow keys steer a tiny man who jumps in short hops; bombs drift slowly down from above; your job is to dodge them and gather 39 gold coins. That is the entire design — no story, no bosses, no clever twist, just the primal loop of jump, collect, do not get hit. The whole program fits in fifty kilobytes, less than a single phone photo takes up today.

As an evening of entertainment it obviously does not hold up, and pretending otherwise would be silly. As an artifact it has a certain charm. Homebrew development for DOS long after its commercial death is a curious chapter of gaming history, and Scroller shows its very first step: bare movement, bare collecting, bare dodging. The author later built the fuller game Super Silverbrothers on this foundation, so you are looking at a prototype that actually led somewhere.

Who is it for, then? Archaeologists. If you enjoy watching how games come to be — what a first attempt looks like before craft arrives — the few minutes are worth it. If you want a platformer that stands on its own, look elsewhere; that is no insult to a program that never claimed to be more.

You can poke at it on oldgame.cz directly in your browser, nothing to install.
