Tungkol sa laro

Hindi pa naisasalin ang review na ito — ipinapakita ang orihinal (English).

Pool on screen — a simple idea that looked like the perfect candidate for computer conversion in 1988. Rack 'Em is exactly what it promises: a pool simulator for DOS, where you play without fuss and without graphic decoration.

Rack 'Em – screenshot 1

It's pure pool. You set up the balls, aim the white, use the mouse or keyboard to determine angle and power, and then you watch what happens. The game calculates physics — balls crash into each other and bounce off the rails with reasonable plausibility. It's not about photorealistic bombast, which would be too much for the eighties, but a functional, playable system.

The mechanics are straightforward to the point of pain, and that's both its strength and weakness. When you get the angle and power right, you feel a small sense of satisfaction. But after ten minutes you've won. The game doesn't burden you with puzzles, ambitions or long-term motivation. It's like hitting balls on a table, nothing more. Control is flawless — that's true — but interaction with the game is exhausted very quickly. Graphics are plain, sound is minimal, no deeper variability.

Rack 'Em is a curiosity from the early days of PC gaming, when developers tried to digitize ordinary real-world games. It's not bad — just limited. It was fun for a quiet evening, for a moment, not a game you'd come back to all the time.

Rack 'Em – screenshot 2

Today anyone interested in seeing what basic-level game programming looked like in the eighties will play it. It's nothing that would captivate you, but it's a dignified reminder of times when pool simulators on PC were an event. Try it in a browser with low expectations — it's more of a historical record than a playable experience.
