Dizzy VII - Crystal Kingdom Dizzy

Dizzy VII - Crystal Kingdom Dizzy is an entry in the long-running series about the egg-shaped hero, here in its ZX Spectrum form. This particular record has no year or developer filled in; the series as a whole ran from the second half of the eighties, and this final numbered chapter belongs to its very end, when the eight-bit Spectrum was already fading.

What made the line distinctive was its hybrid design. Dizzy is a platformer and an adventure at once: the character hops between screens that join into one connected world, collects objects and uses them wherever something blocks the way. Only a few items can be carried at a time, so a large share of play is ferrying things back and forth and remembering what is missing where.

The movement carries the series' familiar momentum. The hero rolls, landings are hard to arrest, and that turns simple gaps into surprisingly demanding obstacles. Falls cost lives, the game is not generous with them, and progress becomes a matter of replaying stretches you already know.

Visually the series always leaned on a cartoon look with strong colours and short interludes between screens. On the Spectrum that meant laying out the attribute grid carefully so sprites would not clash with the background.

The entry is missing a publisher as well, so the year and authorship have to come from somewhere other than the record itself. That was routine for Spectrum tapes: late reprints and copies passed between players lost their sleeves and with them every detail except the title.
