3D Pinball

If pinball had a soul, it would be three-dimensional. This game from the early nineties brought graphics that were a slice of the future in the adult gaming scene of the time — sourced from the public domain, nameless, but functional. MS-DOS, 1992, an attempt to make more of the flipper than just a wooden plank.

The basic idea is as old as time itself: a ball, ramps, bumpers, the goal to rack up points. But here you don't see the ball from above — you see it in space, as if you're looking into a glass box filled with tubes and lit holes. You control the left and right flippers, trying to keep the ball in play and collect points. Nothing complicated, but that three-dimensionality — pretty exotic for PC back then — makes the experience different from paper versions.

Where it falls short: on a PC without a joystick, the flippers and the game are more about reflexes than planning. The keyboard controls are unpredictable, the physics aren't there — the ball flies oddly, as if it doesn't follow any clear mechanics based on the topography. The graphics are clean and readable, but they've aged into a drab brown, without becoming stylishly retro. You'll play for five minutes, then feel like you've seen all there is to see.

For its time, it was a curiosity — proof that computers could handle pinball, and three-dimensional pinball at that. These days, there are solid simulations with proper physics and incredibly detailed content. This is more of a piece of trivia you'd play if you were bored at a PC arcade sometime around '93.

It's worth a spin mainly from a historical perspective — as the beginning of a path that later led to good pinball simulations. It's not poorly made, but it's a simple attempt that ends in your browser after a few rounds precisely because it lacks the layer that would grab you today.
