Saucer Attack

Saucer Attack is a Commodore 64 release from 1984, put out under the Lotus Soft label. The entry records a side view of the playfield and names no individual programmer, which was entirely normal for British cassette software in the first half of the eighties.

By 1984 the C64 had gathered a whole layer of small publishers around it. A cassette cost a fraction of a boxed title, the program fitted into a few dozen kilobytes, and one coder could finish it alone in a matter of weeks. Most of the games that are hard to trace today come from exactly that layer.

The machine itself had more to give than many of those releases used. The VIC-II chip handled hardware sprites and smooth scrolling, while the SID delivered three voices with filtering. A shooter on this hardware could therefore carry a colourful background and a strong soundtrack without slowing down.

The title points at flying saucers, a subject arcade shooters returned to again and again in the years after Space Invaders. Without verified detail about how the game actually plays, only the certain facts stand: a Commodore 64 program from 1984, viewed from the side, distributed on tape.

Tracing releases like this one is difficult work. Small labels rarely left documentation behind, tapes sold through regional shops, and magazine advertisements are often the only proof that a title shipped at all. Retro archives therefore list minimal data for many 1984 names, with the rest assembled from what the original owners still remember.
