Stampede

Stampede was published by Activision in 1981 for the Atari 2600 and belongs to the company's early wave — the first independent publisher making games for someone else's console. The player rides alongside a herd and ropes as much cattle as possible before the animals get away.

The structure is entirely of its year: there is no ending and no levels in the modern sense, only a steadily rising pace and a score that keeps climbing while you keep up. The score was the whole point. Activision famously sent embroidered patches to players who photographed a high enough total on their television screen and mailed the picture in.

All of this ran on extremely limited hardware. The Atari 2600 had only a few dozen bytes of memory, and the picture was assembled line by line as the television beam drew it, so every extra moving object was a genuine engineering problem. Distinguishing the herd into animals with different speeds under those constraints took real ingenuity.

The side view recorded in our entry matches the game: the camera tracks the rider from the side while the herd rushes past. It is a single-player title, and competition happened the way it always did then — over the highest number anyone could reach.

Activision was also the first to print programmers' names in its manuals, which was a genuine break with practice. Until then developers were anonymous staff, and the dispute over credit is precisely what led to the company's founding — a decision that changed how games were talked about.
