Penguin Software released Expedition Amazon in 1983, joining the publishers trying to move tabletop role-playing onto eight-bit home computers. It pairs a top-down view with an RPG structure: an expedition into the Amazon rainforest, exploration, combat and equipment management.

On a Commodore 64 in 1983 that was an ambitious brief. An early computer RPG had to fit a map, a statistics system, combat resolution and an inventory into a few dozen kilobytes, so the graphics stayed schematic and a great deal of information was communicated through text and numbers. The trade-off looks raw now, but it is exactly what allowed depth that arcade games of the day could not touch.

Context matters here. 1983 predates the big series that would eventually define the genre. The conventions were still being worked out, and every publisher interpreted the translation from tabletop differently, which produced a wave of titles that vary wildly. Some lean on exploration, others on tactical combat or supply management.

For the player this means a slow pace and a lot of reading. Progress rests on planning, watching your party's condition and careful scouting rather than reflexes. Anyone new to the format should expect the first stretch to be mostly about learning the interface.
