Street Sports Basketball from 1987 isn't an NBA simulator. It's straightforward: two players, four directions, and a button for shooting. The game runs on MS-DOS, graphics are minimalist — characters like Tetris pieces, court in bird's-eye view. But that very minimalism is what makes it something special. It pulls it off better than later "realistic" versions.

The mechanics are direct and that's its strength. You grab the ball on the wing, drive to the basket, your opponent fouls or blocks you. You shoot with a button — the longer you hold it, the harder your shot. Distance counts, angle too. No roster of specialists with 99-rated three-pointers here, no mucking about with animations. You play straight through until someone scores all the points. A twenty-minute game plays out in ten minutes flat without any fussing.

This game didn't bring a revolution. A year later nobody would've noticed it once NBA Live showed up. But that's exactly why it's interesting — it shows us how much we valued artificial constraints back then. Internet café regulars didn't fire it up for realistic physics, but because it was fast, fun, and you could play back-to-back without getting bored.

It aged badly. The graphics are still passable in context, but the controls are clunky. You wait for the game to understand what you want to do while your opponent sprints across the court with the ball. The pace feels downright chaotic at times, especially at first, until you get used to it.

Who's it for today? Those who want to see how sports games were played before they started being simulated. Those who care more about fun than perfection.
