Muhammad Ali Heavyweight Boxing is a licensed boxing game for the Sega Mega Drive, released in 1992. Park Place Productions handled development and Virgin Games published it. The bout is shown from the side, the same angle television uses for boxing, so both fighters stay fully visible and the player can read the distance between them.

By 1992 the Mega Drive's sports catalogue was leaning heavily on real athletes. A licence like this one sold the game by itself, but it also created an obligation: the figure in the ring has to resemble a specific person in how he moves, how he stands and how he takes a punch.

Boxing games of that generation are built on a small input set — two or three punches, a guard, lateral movement — out of which the rhythm of a round is assembled. Staying upright means watching stamina, slipping shots and not emptying the tank in the opening seconds. Short rounds and the breaks between them set the pacing.

The Mega Drive hardware suited the genre. Large sprites with smooth animation, a contrasting arena crowd and solid impact sounds carried the atmosphere without the digitised video that only computer versions on large media could afford at the time.

Licensed boxing games carry a built-in problem: the name on the box sets expectations the fighting system has to carry. A player arrives imagining a specific style — footwork, guard, timing — and looks for it in the ring. Where that fails, the licence stays a sticker, which is why such games are judged mostly on how differently each opponent behaves.
