Dizzy - The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy

I remember the first time I launched a game with an egg in slippers and thought to myself, what the hell is this. Dizzy — that round-faced British Codemasters hero — was far less famous in Czechia than in England, but whoever encountered him never forgot him.

The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy is a platformer adventure from 1994 in which you control the aforementioned animated egg and traverse an expansive world full of objects, puzzles, and characters. The goal is classically adventurous: collect things, combine them, talk to people, and gradually unlock the path forward. The setting is fairy-tale through and through — trees with faces, wizards, peculiar creatures. None of it took itself seriously, and that was intentional.

The mechanics revolve around inventory and a simple physics model. Dizzy rolls, jumps, and falls — and that last one will frustrate you the most. Falling from a height drains lives, inventory has a limited number of slots, and some puzzles require a precise sequence of steps that the game never hints at. By today's standards, it's brutally unwelcoming in places. Game saving exists, but the checkpoint system in the nineties was simply a different ballgame.

Codemasters claimed this was the first Dizzy game created directly for PC from scratch — not a conversion from Spectrum or Amstrad. Visually, it showed by the standards of the time: larger play areas, more colors, smoother animation of the egg itself. The music came through Sound Blaster acceptably, though it wasn't a compositional breakthrough. Overall, the world was more expansive than in previous entries, and the number of stars to collect — one of the collectible goals — made it a reasonably lengthy experience for its time.

Today the game has aged with dignity, but not without wrinkles. The logic of some puzzles is of its era, meaning sometimes arbitrary. The jumping physics demand patience. Anyone looking for a polished modern adventure won't find it here. But if you want to taste what British game design from the 16-bit micro era looked like when ported to PC, and don't mind a little frustration as part of the experience — you'll get a compact, visually charming game with a surprisingly decent amount of content. You can finish it in a browser in an afternoon, spending the first ten minutes wandering around confused and the next ten smiling. Both feelings are exactly right.
