About the game

Tätä arvostelua ei ole vielä käännetty — näytämme alkuperäisen (English).

You're shooting from a helicopter and buildings tumble beneath you like billiard balls. Hellfire is simple, elegant, and looks great on Mega Drive — until you realize that shooting feels almost secondary, and what really matters is where you move your craft.

Hellfire – screenshot 1

It's a vertical arcade shooter from the late eighties where you control a military helicopter and progress through stylized landscapes filled with enemies and obstacles. Each level is a set distance you need to traverse — not a random battle, but almost like rally racing over a map. The goal is clear: reach the end, destroy as much as you can, collect power-ups.

Controls are archaic in their simplicity — move up-down-left-right and shoot. Weapons change based on collected icons, but you don't really need any of them; basic fire does the job. That's the whole principle right there — the game isn't about frenzied clicking or complex combos, it's about navigation. You have to instinctively feel where you'll get hurt, when an enemy is too close, how to dodge bullets. The graphics are clean, sprites small and readable, no visual chaos your brain has to navigate through. Sega managed to translate that arcade feel into the home without losing any clarity.

Back in the nineties, this was a solid investment for Mega Drive owners who wanted arcade action without any pretense of depth — classic pick-up-and-play stuff. Today, Hellfire is more something you watch than play; it looks nice on screen as retro fodder, but its playability hasn't aged up. After ten minutes you know what you're in for, and replaying the remaining levels is more filling your free time than discovery.

Collectors and nostalgic players will give it a shot, the ones looking for exactly this — a textbook example of home arcade without bloat. The game isn't bad, it just doesn't remember to offer anything new on a second playthrough. A browser will bring it to life for a moment; it's worth a few minutes of nostalgia and nothing more.

About the platform 1988–1997

The Sega Mega Drive (Genesis in the US) was the first widely successful 16-bit console. A direct rival of the SNES and successor to the Master System, it sold around 30 million units and was made famous by Sonic the Hedgehog.

Maker: Sega  ·  Years: 1988–1997

Here on oldgame.cz you play it right in your browser via the EmulatorJS emulator — no install, no plugins, on desktop and mobile.

Recommended controls: This was a console game, so a USB gamepad gives the most authentic feel — just plug it into your computer. The keyboard works as well (see the controls table next to the game).
