Shannara

Shannara, dated 1995, is an adventure game by Legend Entertainment — a studio grown out of the text-adventure world and known for carrying that written density into graphical games. The title and the series name point to Terry Brooks' fantasy novels, which supplied the setting the game is built on.

1995 was the peak year for PC adventures. They arrived on CD with spoken dialogue and painted backgrounds at higher resolutions, competing over which of them looked most like a film. Legend approached the moment soberly: story and puzzles came first, the interface was designed for thinking rather than for spectacle, and production values served the writing instead of replacing it.

The record notes a third-person view and single-player play. In practice that means the familiar structure — walking between locations, gathering objects, talking to characters and working out what belongs where. The fantasy source adds its own creatures and customs, so part of the puzzle work depends on what you learn about the world along the way.

Legend had a reputation as a publisher for patient players. Its games were rarely the fastest or the flashiest on the shelf, but they were carefully written and longer than average, which suited a licence drawn from a multi-volume book series.
