Greendog: The Beached Surfer Dude! came out in 1992 for the Sega Mega Drive with Sega publishing. The year and the platform together tell you most of what the game is: a sixteen-bit platformer from the period when Sega was building its identity on speed, colour and heroes with an attitude.

The protagonist is a surfer stranded on a beach, and the game extracts both its setting and its movement from that. Alongside ordinary jumping there are stretches on a skateboard, on a surfboard and on other conveyances, each changing the pace and the feel of the controls. Alternating like this was popular in platformers of the era because it stopped every stage from looking the same.

Visually the game leans on bright colour and a summer setting, which the Mega Drive handled in its characteristically saturated tones. The console's sound chip gave music a metallic edge that serves as a signature for the platform and separates it from its Nintendo rival within a few bars.

The difficulty is real, and the game assumes you will learn a level's layout rather than improvise through it. The record lists single-player only, which was the normal state of affairs for platformers of this wave.

In the early nineties every publisher was trying to build a recognisable character to carry its brand. That produced a great many platformers whose heroes were designed from a marketing brief rather than a gameplay idea.
