Mr. Muncher

After fifty seconds I stop watching the colored squares moving around the play area. This Mr. Muncher decided to clone Pac-Man, except forgot the most important part — making it fun for more than ten minutes.

It's a classic maze where your little character eats dots and tries to avoid enemies. Nothing new under the sun. The play area looks like a checkerboard, characters move on a regular grid, and your only strategy is running back and forth. By 1992 this should have offered something more — dynamic levels, some enhancements that would change the game, or at least tempo that would speed up. Here nothing happens.

Graphics are simple — pixel art that would look interesting if there was at least a hint of style or wit to it. But there isn't. Colors are in place, character movement animation is smooth, but the whole thing feels like a school programming assignment, not a game you'd stick with beyond obligation. Sound? Classic computer beeping, nothing that would stick in your memory.

Pac-Man clones were completely common in the nineties — I had dozens on diskettes. Some had charm, some had their own idea. Muncher is pure mechanical copying without concept. Levels repeat, enemies are predictable, and before you notice they've beaten you, you've run out of reasons why you even got into this.

Play it now? As curiosity about nineties game development — sure. As entertainment? No. On the emulator it lasts ten minutes, then you tell yourself that Pac-Man or Dig Dug on TV or phone were infinitely better choices. Mr. Muncher is proof that cloning without thought leads nowhere.
