Goal 94

When you launch the game, you know right away: you've got a futsal tournament, a ball, and the rest is up to you. Goal 94 is an unusually understated affair, one I remember more as a dusty corner of the '90s game archive than as a hit everyone was playing.

It's a sports simulator in the very loosest sense of the term. Tournament mode, a handful of teams, and then you're on your own. The game operates on a simple principle: you take the field, control your players, and try to score. Nothing immediately fun, nothing that grabs you by the throat. The ball moves according to some rules, the physics feel more like an impression than science, and the entire match drags on at a pace reminiscent of Sunday dinner at grandma's house on a Czech village—long and educational.

It plays like an archaic sports game, lost among its genre peers. Vague controls, unpredictable ball behavior, an opponent you don't really see playing, just kind of... whacking it somewhere. The graphics are tolerable for DOS, the sound minimal. Playing isn't the kind of fun that pulls you back. It's more like an obligation.

There's no reason to dig it up today. Better football simulators already existed, and the worse ones were at least artistically ambitious or entertaining through their glitches. I remember Goal 94 as a negligible piece of the mosaic, not as a game I'd particularly recommend. Why play it? Only if you're curious what it looked like when Czech developers were making football games for DOS and nobody really cared much.
