Asterix and the Power of the Gods tosses you into a side-scrolling brawl across Gaul in 1995, courtesy of Core Design on the Mega Drive—the same studio that would later obsess over archaeology and tight ropes. This is not that Lara Croft polish. This is a licensed platformer riding the wave of mid-90s comic adaptations, when every cartoon character with a sword got a game.

You're fighting through forests, villages, and Roman fortifications, punching and kicking your way toward scattered magical artifacts. The setup is straightforward: move right, hit things, collect items, reach the boss. Asterix handles like a character who got his power from a potion, not gymnastics—stocky, grounded, about as agile as a Gaul with a full belly of boar. You've got a sword for normal swipes and a special move that costs magic points, your magic meter depleting faster than patience in a Roman camp.

The real tension comes from the collision detection and platform spacing. Jumps require precision that the controls don't always grant smoothly. You'll clear a gap by pixels or sail past an enemy's hitbox because the game's hitboxes are generous with themselves and stingy with you. Enemies respawn constantly, level design circles back on itself, and progress feels less like adventure and more like attrition—keep going until the pattern clicks. It's not broken, but it wears thin fast, especially when a single mistake sends you tumbling back three screens.

Licensed games in this era rarely aimed higher than competent. Asterix and the Power of the Gods delivers exactly that—a functional beat-em-up platformer hybrid with sprites that capture the comic's charm and music that at least tries to evoke a Gallic tavern. It's not memorable for innovation. It's memorable for being exactly what it needed to be: a game that existed, that ran, and that technically worked.

Today, it sits in that awkward middle ground. The Mega Drive has better platformers and better brawlers in its library. But if you've got twenty minutes and nostalgia for when Core Design made games about comic book characters instead of archaeology, the browser version asks nothing of you but patience. It's a museum piece wrapped in asterisks and Romans—charming mostly because it doesn't pretend to be more than it is.
