Advanced Pinball Simulator

Codemasters released this pinball game in 1988, with the Oliver twins and Neil Adamson credited on development. Codemasters at that point was building its business on inexpensive cassettes priced well below the major publishers, and the Olivers were among the most productive names supplying that operation.

Pinball was a harder brief on the ZX Spectrum than it looks. The machine had no hardware sprites and no smooth scrolling, and its attribute-based colour scheme limited how many colours could occupy each eight-pixel block, which makes a small fast object crossing a colourful table a genuinely awkward technical problem. Just as important, the bounces had to feel predictable. A pinball game whose physics the player cannot trust stops being interesting within a minute.

What it offers is what the genre offered on eight-bit hardware: a table with targets and bonus features, two flippers, a score counter, and the simple objective of keeping the ball alive. There is no campaign and no progression, which makes it a natural short-session game — load it, play a few balls, see where the number lands.

Its interest today is partly historical. It illustrates the economics of the late-1980s British market with unusual clarity: a small team, a short development cycle, a clearly bounded genre, and a price low enough to make the game an impulse buy rather than a decision. It runs in the browser here, which is convenient, because the one thing you can only learn about an eight-bit pinball game by playing it is whether the ball behaves the way your hands expect.
