Sopwith has that peculiar charm of things that worked back in the eighties and nobody bothered to make better. You fly a World War I biplane, shoot at enemies, bomb bridges and factories. Done. No apologetic explanations, no story — just a simple straightforward idea and manual controls where you have to trust your own delicate touch.
It's arcade in its purest form. Press spacebar — fire. Arrow keys or WASD — move up and down. The plane has weight and inertia, so it's not great at braking into targets. The terrain scrolls beneath you, objectives vary by mission, and over time enemy planes arrive that don't just want to shake your hand. The graphics are fine — single or dual-color sprites on a black background, in that most immediate DOS style. The sounds are simple, but the moment you hit a target or take a hit, you know what happened.
Gameplay is a matter of failing and trying again. There's no modern tutorial here, no forgiveness. Either you learned to handle that snappy biplane, or you crash into the sea. Each mission has a clear objective — disable this and that structure, make it back home. Failure means starting over. That's how games were made back then, and Sopwith sticks to it without shame.
The Author's Edition from 2000 is really a pilgrimage into history — the original game is from the second half of the eighties, and this remaster just cleaned it up a bit. It's not a revolution, it's not a remake, it's more like carefully lifting an old book with yellowed pages to see that it still holds together. For people who remember how the game looked on Commodore 64 or Apple II, there's something like a late greeting here. For everyone else? More of a curiosity.
Today you can play it in your browser or on an emulator and have fun for a while with its simplicity. It's not the most entertaining shooter you'll find, but there's honesty in it without an agenda. When you lose, you know why — it was your mistake, not the game's. That kind of behavior has disappeared from modern games. And sometimes you miss it.
