Rocket Knight Adventures was published by Konami for the Mega Drive in 1993 and is one of the best platformers the console ever received. You play Sparkster, an armoured opossum with a sword and a rocket pack on his back.

That pack is what makes the game more than another mascot platformer. You charge the rocket by holding the button, and releasing it fires you off in the chosen direction — and bounces you off walls. Bounces chain, so a simple jump becomes a tool for crossing an entire room, shooting an enemy in mid-flight and landing on a ledge you could not otherwise reach. The sword both slashes and fires a short wave, and the game keeps forcing you to alternate.

Konami also folded in an unexpected number of genre detours. One level is a fight on a moving train, another is a vertical climb, another is a straight shooter section in a rocket, and several boss fights are built as self-contained toys with their own rules. None of it lasts long enough to get stale.

Technically it is top-tier work. Sparkster's animation is generous, the backdrops have depth, the music is among the finest ever produced on a Mega Drive, and the game holds its frame rate even when the screen fills.

The weaknesses are length and difficulty. It is short — an experienced player finishes it in an afternoon — and on higher difficulty settings it is harsh in a way that produces anger rather than resolve, with lives draining and unannounced hazards multiplying.

Sparkster returned in 1994 in two different sequels, one on Mega Drive and one on Super Nintendo, and again in 2010 in the downloadable Rocket Knight. Neither matches the first game.

Rocket Knight Adventures takes its codes briskly on the Konami logo screen right after boot. When one lands, Sparkster screams. The stage select then opens from the main menu. One crucial warning: the stage select only works on the Japanese cartridge — on the European one the code makes the sound but does nothing, and the American release does not check for cheats there at all.

The regional differences go further than the cheats: the Japanese release runs Normal, Hard, Very Hard and Crazy Hard, the European one starts at Easy, and the American version uses an entirely different scale (Children, Easy, Normal, Hard) — with all four unlocked from the start, which makes the difficulty code pointless there.
