Pango is one of those early DOS arcade games from 1983 that made no secret of where the wind was blowing from — its model is Sega’s arcade classic Pengo. A maze built of ice blocks, you in the middle, and pesky bees closing in.

Defence and attack are the same move here: push a block and it slides along its path until it crushes something — ideally a bee. If there’s nothing behind the block, it shatters, so you gradually rebuild the whole playfield as you go. The game needs no more rules than that: a few behaviour patterns, a rising tempo and a chase for the high score.

Technically it’s four-colour CGA with PC speaker beeps, but the gameplay hasn’t aged — this is exactly the kind of “one more round” game that made people lose track of time at their keyboards.
