Pango

Pango from 1983 belongs to the very first wave of DOS arcade games and makes no secret of where the wind blows from: it is a clone of Pengo, the arcade machine Sega had sent into the halls a year earlier, in which a penguin defends an icy maze against snow creatures. Here the same formula moves onto the first generation of office PCs — and for an era when hardly anyone played games on a PC, it is a surprisingly honest transplant.

The whole game rests on one brilliant idea borrowed from its model: the maze is built of ice blocks, and those blocks are not scenery but weapons. Push a block and it slides until it hits something — and whatever it sweeps up along the way gets crushed. Enemies converge on you through the corridors while you demolish and launch blocks to catch them in motion. And when you push a block that has nowhere to slide, it shatters — so even tearing down walls is a move that reshapes the battlefield.

Out of this grows gameplay that is half action, half quick spatial thinking. Running away is not enough; you are constantly deciding which corridor to seal, which one to keep as an escape route, and when to trade safety for an attack. The waves of enemies thicken, the pace rises, and the best rounds tend to end with you betrayed by a trap of your own making — the badge of every good arcade mechanic.

The other side of the coin: this is a PC arcade game of 1983 through and through. A handful of colours, PC speaker beeps, and next to the polished arcade original a visibly poorer show. But crushing sliding blocks is such a sturdy idea that it works even in this austere form — as a ten-minute warm-up for the brain it still does its job reliably.
