You've got a thousand files on your disk and need to find what you created yesterday. Or you want to know how much space is left. Or you simply can't stand typing C: commands at the prompt. Enter dos_manager — a file manager for DOS from 1999 that looks like Norton Commander, just without the glory.
It's a Norton-like application with a two-column interface: your disk drives and folders on the left and right. You can navigate between them, move files, delete them, rename them. Nothing more, nothing less. In the nineties, this kind of thing was standard — not everyone could afford Windows with all its overhead, and not everyone wanted to wrestle with the DOS prompt and all those relative and absolute paths.
Controls are keyboard-based — arrow keys, Enter, Delete to remove files. It's straightforward, no nonsense. As was the custom back then. The interface itself isn't exactly a work of art — black background, white text, a functional command line at the bottom. Compared to Norton, it's drab and unsorted, but it works.
However, the application finds itself in an awkward position. Norton Commander was already a legend in the nineties, and dos_manager was its echo. By 1999, the vast majority of users already had Windows on their drives — DOS was primarily used by those playing older games or dealing with archives. For them, this program was pointless, because Norton gave them a complete solution. For everyone else, DOS was just a memory.
Today, dos_manager remains an accessory without a story. It's not a bad application — it's just a side office in a building where all the key doors are already closed. When you try it in an emulator or DOSBox, only those curious about how file management worked when you had no choice will appreciate it.
Give it a spin if you're interested in how people managed files before Windows won. It's a functional artifact, not a crucial experience, but it represents its era honestly and without pretense.
