Marley's Quest is one of those games that vanished without a trace, and hardly anyone knows about it today. No wonder — the nineties were awash in arcade adventures and graphics that didn't stand a chance against bigger studios.

It's a point-and-click adventure where you control a character named Marley and stumble through a world full of clickable hot spots and dialogue. Typical inventory, typical plot unraveling, typical feeling of "let's not waste time here — find the right click spot or go back and try again." The game sends you through a tutorial and then lets you wander aimlessly.

What makes Marley's Quest genuinely tedious is its graphics from the cheapest of cheap stock. Characters look like paper silhouettes, animation barely exists, and the sounds crackle like an old tape recorder with dead batteries. The controls aren't intuitive — sometimes you stand in front of something that looks interactive, but clicking gets you nowhere. The inventory is by-the-book, the dialogue is devoid of charm.

By the mid-nineties, adventure fans were used to LucasArts with their wit and Day of the Tentacle, or at least something with taste. Marley's Quest doesn't dare to try. It's a calculator on legs that wants you to think it's a game. It lacks personality, reader — that something that makes even a worse game playable.

An archival curiosity for collectors of rarities and oddities. Today in an emulator, playing it is more like self-punishment than entertainment. Only someone keen on reminding themselves how bad games deliberately made themselves just to fill shelf space would have the time for it.
