Bot Soccer

Bot Soccer is an MS-DOS release from 1996, a period when the PC carried an enormous layer of shareware and freeware alongside the commercial market, distributed over bulletin boards and on floppy compilations. In both scope and execution, this title sits in that category.

Top-down football was a popular brief on the PC because it needs neither 3D nor complex animation. The whole pitch fits on screen, formations are readable at a glance, and the whole thing can be written with a manageable amount of code. Using robots as the theme also removes any need for licences, club names or a relationship with a real competition.

1996 was a turning point for DOS. Windows 95 was already on the market and the large publishers were moving on, so the final wave of DOS games came largely from smaller developers who knew the platform and had no interest in starting over. The advantage was that such a game would run on practically anything and needed no installation.
