Arabian Fight

Arabian Fight is a 1992 arcade brawler from Sega, created by the internal studio Sega AM2. It draws on the world of oriental fairy tales – palace gardens, deserts and bazaars form the backdrop for a side-scrolling fight in the spirit of the Thousand and One Nights.

The game leaned on Sega's speciality of the day: dramatic sprite scaling and rotation, which lets characters rush toward and away from the camera at a speed home consoles could not imitate. Fighters grow and shrink with the depth of the scene, giving an otherwise classic side view an unusual sense of dimensionality.

1992 marked the peak of the arcade beat-em-up era – the genre packed arcades worldwide, and manufacturers competed both in how many players could join one machine and in visual trickery. Arabian Fight supports several players fighting together, a crucial business move for the genre: friends around one cabinet meant more coins in the box.

Today the game demonstrates how far Sega's arcade hardware could be pushed before polygonal 3D took over. Its fairy-tale styling also sets it apart from the flood of urban street brawls the genre was otherwise full of.

The fairy-tale choice had a practical motive too: arcades were saturated with street brawlers, and operators wanted machines that stood out differently. Oriental scenery, giant sprites and a rich palette made the cabinet visible across the whole arcade – first-glance attraction mattered as much in the arcade business as the game itself.
