Keen's head makes a clicking sound like an old jaw snapping when it hits the ceiling. You wouldn't think to worry about such a detail in a 1991 game, yet in this Tom & Jerry–style platformer, Commander Keen stays in your memory longer than many a modern AAA story.
The fifth installment takes place in some giant machinery where mechanics blend with retro-futurism. Keen is trapped again, this time by technology. The goal is simple — jump, collect things, and throw yourself fearlessly into five more areas packed with danger. No complex environmental peeping or dialogue, just you, a kid with big ears, and precision movement.
The gameplay hasn't evolved much from previous entries. You jump, bonk your head into things for secrets, descend into chasms knowing you'll come back worse for wear. New abilities like a flying belt or special boots add some firepower to your arsenal, but the core remains — precise timing, jumping a few pixels at just the right moment, and enemies you mostly dispatch by bouncing on them. Patience tests are brutal here. Some jump sequences demand knowledge of the exact position, otherwise a lava stream sends you back to the level start and you begin anew.
From a historical perspective, it's fascinating how the nineties imagined the future — everything's wires, rubber, and colorful glimmers. The graphics carefully drawn by John Carmack and his team age gracefully. A forty-something will applaud today how every frame of Keen's animation was hand-calculated and designed back in 1991. There's no dynamic system or procedural generation here — just honest pixel-art work.
