When you load a beat-em-up with Asterix into your handheld, most would expect just another mediocre licensed cash-in. This Game Boy Advance title, however, surprises — it's nothing revolutionary, but it works.
It's a classic brawler where you walk through levels and fight Romans. Asterix or Obelix (your choice at the start), joined by the other character, and then it's just straight ahead. Individual sections are short, which suits a portable console. The goal is simple: reach the end, defeat the boss, move on. The plot is just window dressing — nobody expects much from it anyway.
The mechanics are straightforward — attack, jump, and the occasional special move where Obelix swings around like a heavy anchor. Character animations are solid, sounds are decent, but nothing that'll pull you to the screen by sheer force. Switching between the two heroes at least helps break up the monotony a bit. The problem is that it plays on brute force — there's no finesse, no combos, no reason to try anything other than mashing the attack button over and over.
The release date isn't entirely clear, but based on it being on GBA, you're looking at 2002–2005. Better brawlers already existed on handheld platforms back then. This is just standard license work — the money was on Asterix, and the target was kids who knew Asterix.
Today it's mainly for franchise fans. If you grew up with the comics and feel like you're missing something with these characters, you can play it in your browser. It's not bad, just unnecessary — there are better ways to spend your time with old beat-em-ups on GBA.
