Soldat, released in 2002 by Polish developer Michał Marcinkowski, is a cult 2D multiplayer shooter that blended the fast side-scrolling movement of games like Worms and Liero with the twitch gunplay and modes of first-person shooters like Quake and Counter-Strike. Little ragdoll soldiers run, jump and jetpack across small side-view maps, spraying bullets and leaving the ground splattered in the game's famously liberal blood.

Its charm was in the feel: floaty but skill-rewarding movement, a satisfying arsenal from combat knives to the notorious barrett rifle, and physics-driven bodies that flopped everywhere. Modes covered classic deathmatch, capture the flag, and team play, and the game thrived on LAN parties and small internet servers. A modding and mapping community kept it alive for years, and it later went open source.

Soldat holds up as one of the definitive indie multiplayer games of its time, made largely by one person before that was common. It's easy to pick up, hard to master, and still genuinely fun in a chaotic, low-commitment way. For anyone who spent school-computer-lab afternoons flag-running with friends, it remains a nostalgic touchstone, and it plays just as well today with a few people and a shared server.
