Far Cry

Far Cry arrived in 2004 as the debut of German studio Crytek, and it was a genuine jolt to the shooter genre. Its CryEngine rendered vast, sun-drenched tropical islands with draw distances and lighting that put nearly everything else to shame at the time — you could spy an enemy outpost from a distant cliff, then choose your approach across open jungle. As mercenary Jack Carver, stranded after his boat is destroyed, you fight your way through island mercenaries while uncovering a sinister genetic experiment.

What set it apart from the corridor shooters of the era was the freedom. Encounters played out across sprawling spaces, and the AI would flank, take cover and hunt for you, rewarding stealth and clever use of the terrain and vehicles. The binocular-tagging of enemies before a firefight became a signature bit of tactical prep. The mid-game arrival of the mutant Trigens shifted the tone toward horror and split opinion, but the core gunplay remained strong throughout.

Far Cry launched a franchise that Ubisoft would take in a very different, formula-driven direction, but this original stands on its own as a technical showcase and an open-ended shooter ahead of its time. It's demanding and occasionally uneven, but its sense of place and freedom still impresses. A landmark that helped point the way toward the open-world shooters that followed.
