Formula One Grand Prix

Formula One Grand Prix, released by MicroProse in 1991, was the work of Geoff Crammond, the designer already celebrated for Revs and Stunt Car Racer, and it set a new benchmark for racing simulation on home computers. Modeling the 1991 F1 season, it recreated all sixteen circuits of that year with a fidelity that stunned players at the time, even though licensing meant the real driver and team names had to be edited in by hand or approximated.

What separated it from the arcade racers of its day was its commitment to simulation. You could tune gear ratios, wings, tyre compounds and fuel loads, and the handling model rewarded genuine understanding of racing lines, braking points and weight transfer. A full season structure with qualifying, practice and championship points, along with adjustable AI difficulty and driving aids, meant it could accommodate both newcomers and hardcore sim enthusiasts. Its solid-3D graphics, running smoothly on period hardware, were a technical showcase.

Often referred to by fans simply as World Circuit, its US title, the game established the template that Crammond would refine across the Grand Prix series through the rest of the decade. It holds up as a foundational F1 sim, historically important and still respected for the depth of its underlying model.
